What is Digital Identity?

Digital Identity includes everything a person does on the internet: accessing a website, playing a video game, commenting on a post, or sharing information. These actions create a ‘profile’ for each user which can be positively or negatively impacted according to what the user does behind the screens.

The concept of digital identity is closely related to personal details and privacy. Every user that surfs the web is responsible for their actions. Even in the case of minors, their parents are liable for their child’s behavior on the internet, according to the law in some states.

You may wonder: “Is there a way to make my digital identity anonymous?” Due to the laws and policies each country has in place regarding cybersecurity, it is impossible for a user to surf the web without being identified.

However, it is possible to have a profile with false information such as when creating a username to access a video game, for example. This practice is common, and is preferred by those who would like to remain anonymous or seek to take advantage of their anonymity.

Tips to Protect Your Digital Identity:

  • Social media platforms have access to your personal information: even when a user chooses to definitively disable an Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter profile, these platforms have privacy policies in their terms and conditions that allow them to keep the information you provided when signing up. Parents should be the ones to create their children’s profiles to ensure they are providing the least amount of information possible.
  • Teach children how to interact in the virtual world: youngsters tend to interact with those who share the same interests on the internet, either through online gaming or other means. Therefore, it is crucial that they avoid interacting with strangers and giving away personal information.
